Kathmandu, April 28: The Nepali Congress has expressed concern over the government’s move to adjourn Parliament and introduce laws through ordinances.
In a statement issued on Monday, party spokesperson Devraj Chalise said the practice undermines democratic values, parliamentary dignity, and the constitutional lawmaking process. “The government’s decision is a clear encroachment on the legislature’s authority by the executive,” the statement read.
The party warned that resorting to ordinances despite holding a clear majority in Parliament signals a dangerous trend toward centralisation of power.
The Nepali Congress has urged the government to uphold democratic norms, respect parliamentary procedures, and reconsider its decision immediately.
Meanwhile, the move has drawn criticism from various political parties and experts. Leaders from the CPN-UML, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), as well as constitutional experts, have raised concerns over the growing practice of issuing ordinances by bypassing Parliament.
According to sources, if any provisions in the ordinances are found to contradict the Constitution, the President may choose to withhold authentication or return them to the government for reconsideration. In certain cases, the ordinances could also be subjected to legal scrutiny through the Supreme Court. #Nepal
