Morang, May 5: Employees of Biratnagar Jute Mills Limited have demanded immediate payment of their outstanding wages in line with a ruling by the Labour Office Morang.
The workers said they have yet to receive their salaries despite a decision in their favour by the Labour Office and subsequent legal proceedings. After prolonged non-payment, employees had earlier filed a case at the Labour Court.
On Monday, the workers submitted a memorandum to the Morang District Administration Office, urging authorities to intervene. The memorandum, addressed to the Ministry of Industry Commerce and Supplies, calls for the immediate settlement of long-pending dues.
A total of 46 employees, including staff at various levels, have not been paid wages for the period between May 14, 2016, and mid-December 2020. The total outstanding amount stands at Rs. 30.21 million.
According to Administrative Officer Taranath Timilsina, nearly Rs. 30 million in unpaid wages remains pending from both the government and the mill’s management.
The Labour Office in Morang had ruled in favour of the workers on January 3, 2020. However, as the decision was not implemented, employees have continued to approach multiple authorities.
The workers also cited a decision from the mill’s general assembly held on April 25, 2025, which endorsed the payment of dues. Despite this, they say the administration has delayed action.
“We have not received the return of our labour for a long time,” the memorandum states. “Even after official rulings and decisions, payment has been repeatedly postponed.”
Employees further stated that they have submitted multiple applications—with 17 supporting documents—to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Industry.
The memorandum was submitted by Public Relations In-charge Yog Bahadur Subba, Accounts Officer Shyam Kumar Lama, Administrative Officer Taranath Timilsina, and others.
The workers have warned that if payments are not made immediately as per the rulings of the Labour Court and Labour Office, they will launch further legal action and street protests. #Nepal
