Kathmandu, May 12: The government has announced national security, border management and the modernisation of security agencies as key priorities for the fiscal year 2026/27.
Presenting the government’s policies and programmes, President Ram Chandra Paudel said Nepal would strengthen and modernise defence and security structures while adopting a balanced foreign policy approach.
The government stated that border disputes would be resolved through diplomatic means and relations with neighbouring and friendly countries would be expanded on a multilateral basis. “Border disputes will be resolved through diplomatic means,” President Paudel said while unveiling the policy document.
The government also announced plans to expand Nepal’s diplomatic presence abroad through a “Brand Nepal” campaign aimed at promoting the country internationally and attracting foreign investment in tourism infrastructure.
In the security sector, the government pledged to gradually reduce dependence on imported supplies by producing essential materials and equipment for the Nepali Army and other security agencies within the country. The policy document also includes provisions to introduce face detection tools at border checkpoints and establish an integrated border management information system.
According to the government, training programmes for security personnel will be expanded and their strategic capabilities enhanced. Another major policy announcement involves transforming prisons into rehabilitation-focused correctional facilities.
While presenting the policies and programmes, President Paudel reiterated the government’s commitment to prison reform, with emphasis on rehabilitation and correction rather than punishment alone. However, similar commitments have appeared in previous policy documents, while concerns continue over prison overcrowding, inmate clashes and repeat offences after release.
The government said the new policies reflect continued efforts toward institutional reform, security modernisation and stronger diplomatic engagement at regional and international levels. #Nepal
