Baglung, July 16: The Jaimini Municipality of Baglung has claimed it has solved the issue of squatters in the municipality by providing them with houses and land ownership certificates.
The municipality bought land and built houses for 18 identified homeless families and handed over the land ownership certificates.
According to Deputy Mayor Harihar Sharma, efforts to solve the squatter problem had already started since the tenure of the previous municipal executive.
He said that even though all squatters’ families have received houses, land, and land ownership certificates, the process to formally declare the municipality squatter-free through the National Land Commission is still pending.
The Deputy Mayor added that it is the state’s responsibility to provide citizens with safe housing, and accordingly, the municipality has purchased land, built houses, and distributed ownership certificates to them after identifying the genuine squatters in the municipality.
The municipality has also built houses for 44 families who were either homeless or displaced due to natural disasters, or unable to build homes because of financial difficulties.
The deputy mayor stated that the municipality has made procedures to provide Rs 300,000 to homeless families, Rs 250,000 to families who lost their homes due to disasters, and Rs 200,000 to families unable to rebuild their homes due to financial difficulties.
In the first phase, houses were built for families who did not have a home for up to three generations. In the second phase, the municipality stated that houses were built for families who, due to disasters or financial problems, couldn’t live in their own homes and had to stay in someone else’s house.
