Minister Pokharel urges for academic autonomy

Kathmandu, July 23: Minister for Education and Sports, Sashmit Pokharel, has underlined the need for ending party influence and sharing at universities, thereby ensuring academic autonomy.

Pro-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University and Minister for Education, Pokharel argued the universities had been dynamic after new vice chancellors were appointed with the mandate of reform and transformation. The Minister said it during a programme organized on the 67th anniversary of TU on Thursday.

He urged all concerned to launch new chapter at TU by keeping intact its historical identity, promote academic autonomy with the end of undue political influence and enforce meritocracy. Pokharel made it clear that the government would not exert influence or pressure on universities. The newly appointed vice chancellors were requested to ensure good governance in entire aspect of the universities.

The Minister also suggested TU professors to exchange knowledge with foreign universities in order to make the university internationally competitive.

On the occasion, Vice Chancellor of TU, Dr Bhola Thapa, vowed further quality and excellence at TU which bears historic significance. It is the national heritage of higher education in Nepal, he argued.

Dr Thapa also informed that efforts would be made for good governance and global collaboration and concentrate on knowledge, research and innovation. Even an annual publication of TU was released at the programme. #nepal #rss
