Kathmandu, July 26: Restructuring of the Bal Mandir (Children’s Home) with infrastructural reform has begun at Naxal, Kathmandu.
Implementation of the initiative followed the directives of Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security, Sita Badi, who recently visited the organisation.
The restructuring initiative began on Saturday in coordination with the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport.
During the Minister’s field inspection, the physical status of the children’s home was found to be severely dilapidated.
Water had accumulated inside the building and a foul odour present due to the absence of an effective drainage system.
The toilets and bathrooms were squalid, and children of different age groups being accommodated together, said the Minister’s secretariat.
The Ministry’s top delegation visited the facility upon receiving complaints and grievances about its sordid situation.
In the first-phase of intervention, the Ministry had shifted 20 children under two to a safer place. Following the rescue, the Minister had wanted the bodies concerned to promptly proceed with the physical improvement, ensuring a safe, clean and orderly environment for the children at the home.
According to the Ministry, the improvement of the drainage system has been underway in the first phase of reform.
The renovation plans includes the restoration of the Temple’s building and other damaged structures, upgrading of toilets and bathrooms, sanitation management, access to safe drinking water and the construction of child-friendly infrastructure.
As the Ministry reports, the Minister directed the authorities concerned to complete all the required improvement works, meeting prescribed standard before the upcoming Dashain festival.
