House of Representatives meeting adjourned again

House of Representatives
House of Representatives at New Baneshwor, Kathmandu

Today’s meeting of the House of Representatives has been postponed. The US Aid Project Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact was on the agenda for today.

A notice issued by the General Secretary of the Parliament Secretariat, Dr Bharat Raj Gautam, stated that the next meeting is slated for tomorrow (Friday) at 1 pm.

The ruling party coalition is divided over the approval of the MCC. The Nepali Congress is open to endorse and ratify the MCC agreement while ruling coalition partners – CPN (Maoist Center) and CPN (Unified Socialist) – have been opposing the parliamentary ratification of the Compact.

There was protest against the MCC outside of the parliament at Baneshwor today as well. A group close to CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist) and some interest groups have been engaged in the protest regularly. However, police have showed restraint so far.

The leaders of the ruling coalition have been trying to forge consensus on the MCC Compact.
