Kathmandu, Jan 5: Nepal has to compete with South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Netherlands in the group stage of Twenty-20 World Cup Cricket. In the schedule announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday, Nepal will have to play three group stage matches against Test playing nations.
The Twenty-20 World Cup tournament is being held in West Indies and America from June 1 to 30. Nepal has got the opportunity to play South Africa and Sri Lanka for the first time in Twenty-20 International format.
For the first time, 20 teams are competing in the T-20 World Cup. Nepal secured a place in the World T-20 by reaching the finals of the World Cup qualifiers held in Kathmandu in the month of Kartik, 2080 BS.
Nepal is going to play T-20 World Cup for the second time. Earlier, in 2014, Nepal played only one T-20 World Cup tournament. Nepal defeated Afghanistan and Hong Kong in the group stage. Nepal, which was defeated by Bangladesh, could not reach the second round.
Arch-rivals India and Pakistan have again been drawn in the same group. Along with India and Pakistan, Group ‘A’ has Ireland, Canada and America. Group ‘B’ has England, Australia, Scotland, Oman and Namibia and group ‘C’ comprises West Indies, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea and Uganda. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight.
Presently, Nepal has 16th position in the T-20 international rankings. South Africa is in sixth, Sri Lanka eighth, Bangladesh tenth and Netherlands 12th.
