Potato promotion programme in Myagdi

Myagdi, Dec 20: In a bid to promote potato and get more benefit from agriculture, potato farming is expanded to more than 800 ropani of land in Myagdi district.

All six local levels including five rural municipalities in the district have opted for commercial farming of potato as a cash crop.

Agriculture Knowledge Centre in Myagdi has expanded the potato farming even by providing farmers with the grant through potato promotion programme at the community level.

Chief of Agriculture Knowledge Centre in Myagdi, Sanjib Bastola, said commercial potato farming is done in some 850 ropani of land from 21 different farmers’ groups and cooperatives under the potato promotion programme.

According to Bastola, preparations are ongoing to do potato farming in 300 ropani of land even in the rainy season.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperative of Gandaki Province has allocated Rs 12 million for the protection of potato and its commercial venture in the current fiscal year.

The Gandaki province government has implemented this programme since last year to attract farmers towards potato farming, and making the district self-sufficient in potato production.
