Government to halt land-related ordinance, approves five others

Kathmandu, Mar 4: The government has decided to halt the land-related ordinance while agreeing to pass five other ordinances. The ruling coalition partners have reached a consensus to approve the five ordinances in the parliament, excluding the one related to land.

These five ordinances are scheduled to be passed by the House of Representatives on Falgun 21 and the National Assembly on the Falgun 22. Initially, the government had introduced six ordinances. However, due to opposition from coalition partners Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (JSPN) and Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP), the land-related ordinance has been withheld, leaving only five to proceed for parliamentary approval.

The land-related ordinance, which amends certain Nepal Acts, was issued on Magh 2. Prior to that, on Poush 14, an ordinance amending certain Nepal Acts related to cooperatives was issued. Furthermore, on Poush 29, four additional ordinances were introduced.

These four ordinances include Ordinance to Amend Certain Nepal Acts Related to Good Governance Promotion and Public Service Delivery, Financial Procedure and Fiscal Responsibility (First Amendment) Ordinance, Privatization (First Amendment) Ordinance, and  Ordinance to Amend Certain Nepal Acts Related to Economic and Business Environment Reform and Investment Promotion.

All six ordinances have already been presented in both houses of parliament. However, due to JSPN’s disagreement on the land-related ordinance, the government has been unable to secure parliamentary approval for all ordinances at once.

With only 27 days remaining before the ordinances expire, the government has decided to halt the land-related ordinance. As per constitutional provisions, ordinances must be approved by parliament within 60 days of the commencement of a parliamentary session. #ordinance #nepal
