Banepa, May 7: A group of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, who had been temporarily residing in Shankhu, Ward No. 12 of Dhulikhel Municipality, were relocated back to Kathmandu.
According to local representatives and police, 49 Rohingya refugees belonging to 11 families were sent back. Deputy Superintendent of Police Min Bahadur Ghale of the District Police Office, Dhulikhel, stated that the group had arrived from Kapan in Kathmandu last Monday evening and were therefore returned to the same location.
Previously, in Magh 2076 B.S. (January/February 2020), 34 Rohingya refugees from 10 families, including 13 children, had been living in makeshift shelters in Kushadevi, Ward No. 3 of Panauti Municipality. However, they were forced to leave after locals opposed the construction of shelters intended to house around 140 refugees. The group then returned to Lasuntar in Kapan, Kathmandu.
Currently, Rohingya refugees from Myanmar are settled in the Lasuntar and Ram Mandir areas of Kapan, located in Budhanilkantha Municipality–11 of Kathmandu. It is estimated that about 400 refugees are living on roughly 14 ropanis of land across the two settlements. #refugees #rohingya #nepal
