Sher Bahadur Deuba couple in critical condition after khukuri assault, hospital says

Kathmandu, Sept 10: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, Dr Arzu Deuba Rana, are reported to be in critical condition following an attack at their residence during the Gen Z protests on September 9, according to hospital sources.

Protesters attacked their residence in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, injuring both. They were later airlifted to hospital by a Nepal Army helicopter.

Earlier, it was reported that Deuba ignored to leave the residence earlier despite repeated request from party cadres and well-wishers. He assured the callers that his house was well protected by Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army personnel. But the security agencies failed to rescue Deuba family on time safely.

Deuba, who is elderly, has sustained serious head and chest injuries. Doctors reported that although no major external wounds are visible, repeated blows to his head have caused internal brain trauma. In addition, he suffered a chest injury from a khukuri (traditional Nepali knife) attack. Witnesses said another individual intervened, preventing a fatal strike, but the blade still pierced his chest, causing internal injuries.

A video released yesterday also showed a protester brandishing a khukuri directly in front of Deuba. His family confirmed that the attempted attack could have been deadly if not deflected, but the weapon still struck his chest, leaving significant damage.

Deuba has undergone a CT scan, and doctors have begun further treatment. However, due to multiple head injuries, his condition remains critical.

Similarly, his wife Dr Arzu has also sustained injuries to the head and chest, with hospital reports confirming serious trauma. #nepal #GenZ #deuba
