Banepa, Sept 11: Eighteen prisoners escaped from Nakkhu jail have been arrested from Mangaltar in the district on Thursday.
According to the District Police Office, Dhulikhel, a team from the Area Police Office, Mangaltar, held 18 prisoners and detainees including Sanjay Sah Takla from the BP Highway. They have now been kept at District Police Office, Dhulikhel, said Police Inspector Dinesh Bahadur Kunwar.
Takla was convicted as the main accused of Janakpur bomb blast and had been serving jail term in Nakkhu jail, Lalitpur. Preparation is underway to send all the arrested ones to Nakkhu jail on Thursday itself.
Earlier on Wednesday, detainees had set the District Jail, Dhulikhel on fire. They vandalized and torched the jail, demanding their release as the detainees from other jails had escaped in the wake of GenZ protest.
Currently, there are 283 detainees in the jail.
Police asks escaped prisoners to return to jail
The Police Headquarters has asked the escaped prisoners and detainees to return to jail.
Nepal Police’s Spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Binod Ghimire, informed that the prisoners and detainees, who fled in the wake of GenZ protest, were urged to come in contact with the jail.
They could also get in contact with police units, Ghimire added. “Following the protests across the country on September 8 that resulted into vandalism and arson in various offices and units of the Nepal Police as well as prison offices, numerous prisoners escaped from the jails.
Now, they are requested to contact the relevant district police office, units, or other local security agencies as soon as possible,” a press statement issued by the Police Headquarters reads.
According to the police, more than 14,000 prisoners and detainees combined have escaped the jails, taking advantage of the abnormal situation. Among them, only a few hundred have returned while some have been arrested from different districts. #nepal #GenZ
