Birtamod, Dec 29: An online customs valuation software system has been implemented on a pilot basis at the Mechi Customs Office located in Kakarbhitta. According to Chief Tax Officer Shivalal Neupane, the system will enhance transparency and efficiency in the customs process by determining the actual customs value of traded goods based on transaction value, replacing the reference price list.
The online valuation system has been introduced on a trial basis at eight customs offices across the country, including Mechi Customs. The system has been in operation at the Mechi and Bhadrapur Customs Offices in Jhapa since the end of December, 2025. Chief Tax Officer Neupane stated that the system will encourage legitimate trade and help reduce revenue leakage.
The World Trade Organization has long encouraged its member states to adopt online valuation systems. Speaking at the system’s inauguration, Uttar Kumar Khatri, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, said that the system would help reduce various forms of irregularities and informal transactions at customs points. He added that the government is promoting good governance and taxpayer-friendly practices at customs, and emphasized the need for cooperation from the private sector to ensure effective implementation of the system.
Mechi Customs Office has set an annual revenue collection target of Rs 18.87 billion for the fiscal year 2082/83 BS. Of this target, the office has so far collected Rs 6.82 billion in revenue during the first five months of the current fiscal year, according to the office. #nepal #custom #mechi
