Karki commission submits report on September 8-9 Gen Z protest, recommends action

Kathmandu, March 8: The commission formed to investigate the incidents that occurred during the Gen-Z protest on September 8 and 9 has submitted its report to the Prime Minister Sushila Karki.

The commission handed over the report after conducting a detailed study and fact-finding investigation, particularly into the incidents that took place on September 8 and 9. According to commission spokesperson and former senior police officer (AIG) Bigyan Raj Sharma, the report includes recommendations for necessary action based on the events, as well as suggestions to reward those who performed commendable work.

The main report prepared by the commission is more than 900 pages, while the complete set of documents, including annexes and other evidence, totals around 8,000 to 10,000 pages, Sharma said. He added that the incidents of the September 8 and 9 have been analyzed in detail in the report.

During the investigation, the commission questioned more than 200 individuals. It also recorded statements from various people and collected opinions and suggestions from witnesses, victims, and experts as part of its comprehensive inquiry.

Sharma said, “In the report, we have tried to investigate the facts behind what we observed. Based on what we saw, understood, and the available evidence, we have provided our opinions and recommendations. Now the report has become the property of the government, and it is up to the government to decide what actions should be taken or who should be rewarded.”

He, however, denied to reveal names including former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and former Inspector General of Nepal Police Chandra Kuber Khapung, among others.

According to Sharma, while receiving the report, the Prime Minister Sushila Karki thanked the commission. The Prime Minister also stated that the report is now the government’s property and pledged that the government will take the necessary steps based on its findings. #nepal #genz
