Airline Operators Association halts helicopter flights in Khumbu region

Kathmandu, Jan 5: The Airline Operators Association of Nepal (AOAN) has suspended helicopter flights in the Khumbu region of Solukhumbu. In a statement issued on Sunday, the association cited ongoing disruptions to flights in the area and announced the suspension of operations until full security assurances are provided.

“All heli flights to the Khumbu region have been suspended from today, January 5, due to a lack of full security assurances,” the statement read. “Fixed-wing airlines operating in the region are also advised to suspend flights if safety cannot be fully guaranteed.”

The suspension follows restrictions imposed by Sagarmatha National Park, Khumbu Pasang-Lhamu Rural Municipality, and local groups and organizations. These groups have raised concerns that helicopter flights and landings in the national park area are posing threats to the forest, environment, wildlife, and their habitats. As a result, a ban on commercial helicopter flights was implemented starting January 1, 2025.

Despite multiple discussions between the association and local authorities, no resolution has been reached. The association also reported that flags have been placed on helipads in the Khumbu region, creating additional barriers to flight operations. #nepal #flight #khumbu #everest
