Aurahi Chair, ward chair held over caste-based discrimination case

Aurahi Rural Municipality Chairman Shivaji Yadav

Lahan, March 22: Siraha’s Aurahi Rural Municipality Chairman Shivaji Yadav and former ward chair and Janamat Party leader Dilip Yadav have been taken into police custody in connection with a caste-based discrimination incident against a Dalit family.

The arrest was made on Friday evening, following allegations that a Dalit family’s home was demolished in Aurahi to make way for a Mahayagya (religious event).

According to Madhesh Province Police Chief and Deputy Inspector General of Police Lalmani Acharya, the two individuals have been detained for investigation. Further legal action will be taken once a formal complaint is filed by the victims.

The incident took place on March 20, when the house of Deepak Malik (Dom) in Ward No. 4, Aurahi Rural Municipality, was demolished using a JCB (bulldozer), allegedly at the direction of Chair Yadav. The soil from the demolished house was also removed, sparking public outrage and accusations of caste-based discrimination.

In response, the Ministry of Home Affairs has summoned Chief District Officer of Siraha, Basudev Dahal, for failing to act sensitively after the incident.

Additionally, both the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Dalit Commission have begun field monitoring of the case.

The issue was also raised in the House of Representatives on Friday, where lawmakers demanded the formation of a parliamentary inquiry committee and urged the government to take immediate action against those responsible. #NHRC #nepal #dalit
