Beehive gift initiative empowers women in Baglung

Baglung, Feb 16: In a bid to empower women through income-generating activities, Kathekhola Rural Municipality of Baglung has distributed beehives along with training on beekeeping. The initiative aims to transform women, who were previously limited to household chores, into entrepreneurs by equipping them with practical skills.

A three-day beekeeping training was recently conducted in Tangram, Ward No. 4, where 20 women were provided with beehives to encourage them to take up beekeeping as a sustainable livelihood.

Speaking on the occasion, Municipality Chairman Raju Thapa emphasized that economic prosperity cannot be achieved through physical infrastructure development alone. Instead, an inclusive approach that provides skill-based training to citizens is essential.  “Many people are moving to cities, even though rural areas hold immense potential,” Thapa said. “The lack of skills has prevented us from linking villagers to productive activities. Our goal is to identify potential areas, train locals, and promote sustainable income sources like beekeeping.”

Last year, the municipality conducted various training programs, including cooking training in different wards, handicraft making from corn husks, slipper-making workshops.

This year, the focus has shifted to women-centric programs. As part of this effort, madal (traditional drum) and harmonium-playing training has been introduced in Wards 1 and 6, according to Suntali Bishwakarma, coordinator of the Local Women’s Coordination Committee.

The municipality hopes that such skill-building initiatives will pave the way for women’s financial independence and rural economic growth. #nepal #beekeeping #beehive #baglung
