Bhutanese refugee scam: Police submits report to Kathmandu District Attorney



Kathmandu, May 22: The District Police Complex Kathmandu has submitted the investigation report against those involved in the fake Bhutanese refugee scam to the District Attorney’s Office today.

On the 57th day of the investigation, the police submitted a report with their opinion to the District Attorney’s Office. Spokesperson of Nepal Police, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Kuber Kadayat, informed that police has submitted a report with the opinion of prosecuting cases of fraud, organized crime and crime against the state.

He said that the Attorney’s Office can add or remove contents to the report. According to him, there will still be a lot of investigation on money laundering and abuse of authority.

A total of 16 people including the former Deputy Prime Minister, Home Minister and others have been arrested in this case. He also informed that an opinion has been given to make the case against 16-17 more people.

Chief of the District Attorney’s Office, Achyutamani Neupane, informed that the prosecution will proceed after looking at the investigation report submitted by the police.

In the Bhutanese refugee scam, 113 victims filed a complaint saying that they were defrauded of more than 270 million rupees. In that incident, then Home Minister Balkrishna Khand, CPN (UML) suspended Secretary and former Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, then Home Secretary Tek Narayan Pandey, Bhutanese refugee leader Teknath Rijal, security advisor to then Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’ Dr. Indrajit Rai, Haj Committee Chairman Shamsher Mian, Gang members Keshav Dulal, Sanu Bhandari, Sandesh Sharma, Sagar Rai, Tanka Gurung, Govind Chaudhary and Ramsharan KC along with former MP Angtawa Sherpa, then Home Minister Khand’s son-in-law Narendra KC, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi’s son Sandeep have been arrested.

Prateek Thapa, son of former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’, Neeraj Rai, son of Indrajit Rai, accused in that case are absconding.

22 complaints registered in the case of fake Bhutanese refugees

So far, 113 people have come in contact with the police saying that they are victims in the case of fake Bhutanese refugees. 22 complaints have been registered on behalf of the victims.

In the report of District Police Complex Kathmandu Superintendent of Police Sitaram Rijal, it is mentioned that more than 270 million rupees were defrauded. In the case, initially, a complaint was lodged at the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office saying that 81 people had been defrauded of Rs 130 million. The office has submitted the file along with the arrested persons to the District Police Complex Kathmandu for further investigation and action. Rijal said that more people filed complaints after that.
