Patan, June 4: Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities, and Social Security, Sita Badi, has said that caste discrimination and untouchability are hindrances to a democratic and advanced society.
Addressing a program organized on the day of Caste Discrimination and Untouchability Eradication Day by the National Dalit Commission here today, Minister said that the contribution of the Dalit community for the democratic protest of Nepal has been significant.
Minister Badi said, “I want to show respect for the contribution of the Dalit community in every change of Nepal. Along with this, the work of the Commission, despite the limited resources and manpower, is praiseworthy.”
Chairperson of the National Dalit Commission, Dev Raj Bishowkarma, said that an inclusive and just society can be built through intensive discussion and dialogue.
He said that the Commission is lobbying for the nation that is for the weak and economically backward.
Member of the Commission Mehale Parki stressed that the recommendations and concerns of the commission need to be implemented.
Attorney General Dr Narayan Dutta Kandel said that the government, commission, and concerned authorities need to work in unity to generate awareness in the eradication of caste-based discrimination.
He said that all of the government mechanisms need to pay attention to aspects of human respect, dignity, and the self-respect of people.
Information officer of the District Police Office Lalitpur, Superintendent of Police Gautam Mishra, expressed the commitment that the police organization will continuously remain active to ensure access to justice for the Dalit community.
Nepal was declared as ‘ nation free of caste discrimination and untouchability’ by the then Parliament on Jestha 21, 2063 B.S. (June 4, 2006). In remembrance of that day, today the Day for the Elimination of Caste Discrimination and Untouchability is being observed with the slogan ‘Effective mobilization of state structures for access to justice for the Dalit community.’ #nepal #rss
