KATHMANDU: Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya has stressed the need for updating the voters’ list and for coordinating with all stakeholders to review polling centre and stations to organise elections in a fair, free, credible and economical way.
For effective management of election, use of technology would be increased to execute works of the Election Commission as per its Third Five Year Strategic Plan, he said while inaugurating a one-day training session for computer operators at the district election offices in Province-1 and 2 and Bagmati Province on subjects related voters’ list update.
“According to the Electoral Rolls Act, new registration of voters’ names in the voters’ list cannot be done at a time when elections have already been announced. But errors in the voters’ rolls will be removed as per the provision to update voters’ list for elections,” he said.
Stating that elections strengthen democracy and help maintain good governance and organising polls as per constitutional responsibility of the Commission is its main duty, he said that there is a need to remove errors in the voters’ list and determine polling centres and stations in the areas that are safe, accessible and undisputed.
The Commission has urged all citizens to make use of the programme to update the voters’ list at local level to be launched soon.
