Champions Trophy: Australia won by 5 wickets in a thrilling game

Kathmandu, Feb 22: In a thrilling ICC Champions Trophy at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, Australia achieved a record-breaking chase to defeat England by five wickets.

England, batting first, posted a formidable total of 351/8, largely due to opener Ben Duckett’s exceptional 165-run innings off 143 balls. Duckett’s performance set a new tournament record for the highest individual score, surpassing previous records held by Phil Salt and Andy Flower.

He was well-supported by Joe Root, who contributed 68 runs, and a late surge from Jofra Archer, who added an unbeaten 21 off 10 balls. Despite early setbacks, including a spectacular catch by Alex Carey to dismiss Phil Salt, England managed to set a challenging target for Australia.

In response, Australia commenced their chase assertively, with Josh Inglis leading the charge. Inglis scored his maiden ODI century, amassing 120 runs facing 86 balls, and found support from Glenn Maxwell. Inglis 8 fours and 6 sixes, and remained unbeaten.

Likewise, opener Mathew Short scored 63 runs, Marnus Labuschagne 47, Alex Carey 69 and Glen Maxwell scored 32 runs not out for Australia.

England’s bowlers faced difficulties containing Australia’s batsmen, and despite securing crucial wickets, Australia successfully reached the target in 47.3 overs, marking the highest run chase in ICC tournament history.

England’s fielding woes, including dropped catches, compounded their challenges. This defeat intensifies pressure on England, especially following a lackluster performance in India, and raises questions regarding Jos Buttler’s captaincy and team selections.

This victory not only underscores Australia’s batting depth but also sets a new benchmark for successful chases in ICC tournaments, highlighting the competitive spirit and high stakes of the Champions Trophy. #ChampionsTrophy #cricket #ICC (Source: Agency)
