Cold wave cripples life in far west

Kanchanpur, Jan 25: Kailali and Kanchanpur districts in Sudurpaschim Province have been badly affected by the cold wave coupled with thick fog for some days.

The people, especially children, sick ones and senior citizens, are hit hard by the adverse weather. The school-going children are suffering fever, cold and stomach ache owing to severe cold, while the elderly ones are facing respiratory problems.

Those facing financial difficulty are also bearing the brunt of hostile weather. People living in huts and landless squatters are braving cold with skimpy clothes. Mandhwoj Luhar staying in Banhara camp shared that it was treacherous for them to walk around due to chill. They get numb while going outside the hut, he added.

“The dew drops from leaky tarpaulin roof in the night, while there are little clothes to warm the body,” Luhar shared the plight. At such, he has no option but to continue making fire throughout the night. The tarpaulin sheet was provided by the donor agency.

He further informed that no such assistance has reached his camp for two years. Similarly, Manoj Chaudhari, who makes his living by working in a transport of riverbed materials from the Mahakali River said he was not able to work in the morning because there was thick fog creating low visibility.

It may be risky to work in the morning because of thick fog, so he operates tractor during day,” he shared. Moreover, the cold wave and fog have affected the vegetable farming. Potato has got blights, the local farmers said.
