The main opposition party CPN UML has said the ruling coalition’s move to impeach the Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana is a conspiratorial move against the judiciary and democracy.
An emergency meeting of the CPN UML Central Secretariat was held in the residence of party Chairman KP Sharma Oli at Balkot, Bhaktapur, on Sunday evening to present the party’s views on Chief Justice Rana.
The meeting decided to oppose the impeachment motion against Chief Justice Rana, concluding that the ruling coalition’s objective behind the move was plunging the country into instability.
After the meeting, UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel said that the party had decided to oppose the impeachment and urge the public, as well, to do so. He added the meeting of the UML parliamentary party Monday would take important decisions to defend the judiciary and denounce the impeachment.
Stating that the ruling coalition, when in power, often carried out such activities against the democratic republic, the UML called on the public to protest the ruling coalition’s attack against the judiciary through Rana’s impeachment motion.
Pokharel also stated that the recent step was a conspiracy to destabilise the relations between the ruling and opposition parties.
The CPN UML decision would be vital for the impeachment process a success. According to Constitutional provisions, any impeachment against Constitutional body chief need two-third majority in the parliament.
The five party alliance do not have two-third majority in the parliament. So, it would be very hard for the ruling alliance to garner sufficient number of votes. The Chief Justice Rana had repeatedly said that he would better face the impeachment but not resign.
