JHAPA: CPN UML candidate Rajendra Pokharel has been elected the mayor while Nepali Congress (NC) candidate Asha Shivakoti registered her win as the deputy mayor of Kankai municipality in Jhapa.
Pokharel was elected the mayor of Kankai in the previous local level election in 2017. He has secured 8,673 votes to become a winner this time. His close contender Rudra Prasad Chimiriya of Nepali Congress obtained only 6,661 votes.
Independent mayoral candidate Sher Bahadur Thapa got 5,961 votes and Shyam Sundar Oli of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) received 2,005 votes.
Likewise, deputy mayoral candidate Shivakoti secured 10,713 votes whereas her close contender Manju Prasain of CPN-UML received 8,875 votes. Manju was elected deputy mayor of Kankai in earlier local level election.
Meanwhile, CPN (UML) candidate has been elected to mayor of Ramgopalpur Municipality in Mahottari district.
According to the Chief Returning Officer Deepak Kumar Kharel, Ramdular Shah was elected to the post securing 5,349 votes. UML’s Reena Devi Yadav was elected deputy chairperson of the same municipality with 4,263 votes.
Shah’s closest competitor CPN (Maoist Centre)’s Ashok Kumar Mandal conceded defeat with 3,586 votes while Yadav’s nearest rival Nepali Congress’s Pushpadevi Kushbaha collected 3,403 votes.
Vote counting here was concluded on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, Nepali Congress’s Mohan Pandey won in mayoral race for Manarasiswa Municipality in Mahottari district with 5,884 votes. Shakuntala Devi of the same party was elected deputy mayor with 5,745 votes.
Pandey defeated Janata Samajwadi Party’s Mahendra Raya who gained 4,920 votes while Shakuntala Devi beat Janata Samajwadi Party’s Nirmala Kumari Devi Singh who garnered 4,842 votes.
