Debate over reform agenda continues in NC Special Convention

Nepali Congress Special Convention

Kathmandu, Jan 13: The closed session of the Special General Convention of the Nepali Congress (NC) has been extended until today as deliberations on key reports continue.

The two-day Special General Convention, which began on Sunday at Bhrikutimandap under the initiative of General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, was originally scheduled to conclude on Monday. However, the convention was extended due to ongoing discussions on the reports presented by the two general secretaries.

According to Manoj Mani Acharya, Coordinator of the Special General Convention Management Committee, the closed session is expected to resume shortly. He added that the registration of convention representatives will also continue today.

Following policy-level decisions on the reports submitted by General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma, the party is expected to advance the election-related processes, according to party sources.

During the closed session, nine separate discussion groups were formed: seven based on the seven provinces, and two representing the Kathmandu Valley and the party’s sister organizations, well-wishers, and public liaison committees.

On Monday, General Secretary Thapa presented a political proposal addressing contemporary issues and outlining a vision to transform the Nepali Congress into a dynamic, modern democratic force. Through the proposal, Thapa stated that the Special General Convention would provide clear direction and effective organizational management, steering the party toward a more structured and forward-looking future.

“We will transform the Nepali Congress into a party that embodies the revolutionary spirit of 2006 BS, the progressive and inclusive vision of 2015 BS, the popular mandate of 2048 BS, and the widely accepted leadership of 2062–63 BS,” Thapa said while presenting the proposal.

The proposal includes a 17-point special resolution aimed at preparing the party for an integrated campaign to build a prosperous nation through renewed energy, unity, enthusiasm, and transformation. It commits the party to curbing corruption and ensuring financial discipline and good governance through the formulation and effective enforcement of laws, strengthening institutional and agency capacity, simplifying and reinforcing procedures, and establishing a transparent, efficient, and accountable administrative system. #nepal #nepalicongress
