New Delhi, Feb 5: The Delhi Assembly elections have commenced, with voting taking place across all 70 seats. A total of 699 candidates are contesting, and the results are expected to be announced on February 8.
Notably, 132 candidates (approximately 19%) have declared criminal cases against themselves. Among these, 81 are facing serious charges such as murder, kidnapping, and rape. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has the highest proportion of candidates with criminal records, with 63% (44 out of 70) of its candidates declaring such cases. The Congress party follows with 41.5%, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with 28%.
In terms of security, over 35,000 Delhi Police personnel, 19,000 home guards, and 220 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed to ensure a smooth voting process. Additionally, drones are being used for surveillance at polling stations.
The main contenders in this election are the incumbent AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, aiming for a third consecutive term, and the BJP, which has not governed Delhi for the past 25 years. The Congress party, which ruled Delhi for 15 years before the AAP, is also in the fray but has not secured a seat in the last two elections. #AAP #india #Delhi #assembly
