Chitwan, May 27: B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital in Chitwan has introduced flow cytometry testing to identify variants (types) of blood cancer within Nepal. The hospital has installed the necessary equipment and trained its medical and technical staff for this advanced diagnostic procedure.
According to Dr. Greta Pandey, Head of the Laboratory Department, over 90 patients have already undergone testing since the service was launched. Previously, such tests had to be sent to India at a high cost. With this new service, the test can now be done for Rs 12,000, significantly reducing both time and expense for patients.
Flow cytometry is a high-level test that involves extracting bone marrow from the spine to determine the specific type of blood cancer. “It is a critical test to identify the type of leukemia or blood-related malignancy,” said Dr. Pandey.
To facilitate the implementation, one doctor and one technician were trained at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital in India, and the service began following their return.
Hospital Executive Director Dr. Shivaji Paudel stated that they are continuously expanding and upgrading cancer treatment services by installing modern equipment and providing necessary training to staff. He added that the new service will directly benefit cancer patients by making advanced diagnostics more accessible locally.
The hospital was established from the generous support of China government. #nepal #cancer
