Govt fully protects and respects freedom of expression: PM Oli

Kathmandu, Feb 21: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has assured that the government will not take any action that violates the right to freedom of expression, emphasizing that he and his colleagues have fought against restrictions on speech in the past.

Speaking at the launch of the book Vyaktitva Yogdaan—a biography of businessman and social worker Rajeshkaji Shrestha, published by the Ishwarlal Foundation—PM Oli criticized some individuals who were once involved in drafting laws but are now protesting against the Social Media Bill, claiming that it curtails freedom of expression.

“They were the ones who imposed a ban on TikTok before, but we reopened it. Now, the same people are advocating for unrestricted speech,” PM Oli remarked. “Under the guise of freedom, actions that disrupt national peace, security, and social harmony are unacceptable. One cannot go to an unfamiliar place and incite violence or make baseless statements. Exercising one’s rights should not infringe on the rights of others.”

Addressing rumors about his alleged wealth in Swiss banks, the Prime Minister dismissed the accusations and countered, “Why would I need so much wealth? I only need two pieces of bread and some lentils. I have nothing to hide; my entire life is open and transparent. Spreading false rumors and making offensive remarks is not part of our culture.”

He further stated that good governance is essential for the country’s prosperity, acknowledging that governance remains a serious challenge. The government, he said, is working swiftly to enact laws and move forward with developmental initiatives.

PM Oli also highlighted the contributions of Rajeshkaji Shrestha in the business sector and the institutional development of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce, describing his life and achievements as an inspiration for future generations. #PMOLI #nepal #book
