Kathmandu, May 10: The government is set to launch a nationwide campaign titled “Price Transparency Week” from Monday with the aim of controlling market irregularities, artificial price hikes, and consumer fraud.
The campaign is being jointly conducted by the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s press expert, Deepa Dahal, said the initiative has been introduced to address the growing problem of price hikes, which directly affect the daily lives of citizens. She expressed confidence that the week-long campaign would become a milestone in curbing market malpractice.
Dahal also urged concerned authorities, civil society, and media personnel to support the campaign by helping monitor market activities and raising public awareness about irregularities.
The special campaign will continue until May 17, 2026. According to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, the Office of the Prime Minister has already directed all concerned bodies nationwide to implement the campaign effectively.
The campaign aims to ensure transparency in the pricing of goods and services, make traders and service providers more accountable, enforce mandatory price lists, strengthen monitoring systems, and take immediate action against violators.
Instructions have been issued to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, provincial chief ministers’ offices, and local governments to carry out the campaign.
Under the campaign, local governments will direct businesses and service providers to maintain mandatory price lists and will conduct regular market monitoring.
The government launched the initiative in response to increasing complaints over inconsistent pricing of goods and services, which often misleads consumers and forces them to pay excessive prices.
Similarly, District Administration Offices have been tasked with activating district-level market monitoring committees, promoting price transparency, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Federal and provincial market monitoring committees will assess market conditions, deploy inspection teams, and initiate strict legal action against those failing to comply with the rules. #Nepal
