KATHMANDU: The government has lifted the ban on the Communist Party of Nepal led by Netra Bikram Chanda ‘Biplab’. A cabinet meeting held at the PM’s residence in Baluwatar Thursday evening decided to lift the ban on the group.
The ban was lifted after a three-point agreement was reached in talks between the government and the group.
After the meeting, Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Parbat Gurung, thanked the negotiating team on behalf of the government.
He also said that the recent efforts of the government for peace have made a significant contribution. Only this morning, a three-point agreement was reached between the government negotiating team and the Chanda group negotiating team.
The MoU has been signed by Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, coordinator of the government negotiating team and Khadga Bahadur Bishwakarma ‘Prakanda’, coordinator and spokesperson of the negotiating team on behalf of the Chanda group.
Following the agreement, today’s cabinet meeting lifted the ban on the Chanda group. According to the agreement reached this morning, all activities of the Chanda group will be conducted peacefully and the ban imposed on their activities by the government will be lifted.
A statement issued after the agreement states that the government of Nepal will lift the ban on the group, release all detainees and dismiss their cases.
Details of the agreement will be made public during a special ceremony at 2 pm on Friday. The ceremony is scheduled to be addressed by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and General Secretary Netra Bikram Chanda ‘Biplab’ on behalf of the NCP Chanda group.
Dr. Rajan Bhattarai, Foreign Adviser to the Prime Minister, was the member of the negotiating team on behalf of the government and Deepak Chalaune was representing the Chanda group. The government had banned the activities of the group on March 12, 2019 stating that it was conducting violent activities.
