Kathmandu, March 26: The meeting of the House of Representatives has been postponed following protests from opposition parties, including CPN (Maoist Centre), Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).
Speaker Devraj Ghimire announced that the session would reconvene after half an hour. The meeting lasted for around 45 minutes only.
As soon as Speaker Ghimire commenced the session, opposition parties stood up in protest. In response, the Speaker granted time for Maoist lawmaker Shakti Basnet from to speak. In today’s meeting, CPN Maoist Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda was also present in the House.
Lawmaker Basnet accused the government of handing over the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to middlemen by removing its Executive Director, Kulman Ghising. He claimed that a government with a two-thirds majority had dishonored a civil servant rather awarding the prize for his outstanding contribution. He further stated that the parliament could not proceed until Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli provided a reason for Ghising’s dismissal.
Despite multiple requests from the Speaker to continue the session, opposition parties persisted in their protests. As a result, the Speaker decided to postpone the meeting for half an hour.
Political parties have been divided over the dismissal of Kulman Ghising. Leaders from Nepali Congress, including General Secretary Gagan Thapa, also raised voice against the dismissal.
The government has already appointed Hitendra Dev Shakya, a high level executive at Nepal Electricity Authority, as Executive Director. #House #nepal
