International Workshop to Support Cancer Treatment held in Chitwan

Chitwan, March 15: An international workshop on treatment of cancer has been organized in Chitwan. Theoretical and practical skills in cancer treatment will be imparted in the four-day workshop.

It is said skills and knowledge on SRS (Stereotactic Radio Surgery), SRT (Stereotactic Radiation Therapy) and SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy) in the treatment of cancer will be provided.

With this technique, cancer of the brain, liver, and lungs can be treated without surgery through radiation. Executive Director of BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Dr Shivaji Poudel, said that medical physicists and radiation oncologists from various countries exchanged experiences and skills in the workshop.

According to him, although the hospital had the necessary equipment for radiation, the equipment was hardly used as the manpower to use this technology lacked proper training. He said that the workshop would help in the effective treatment of cancer through new technology.

In course of the workshop, medical physicists and radiation oncologists shared their experiences on implementation of SRS, SRT and SBRT as well as provided training on these techniques, said Dr Ranjan Bhakta Bhandari, Head of the Radiotherapy Department at BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital.

Stating that the workshop would benefit the doctors and health workers of Nepal, he said the participants had come from various cancer hospitals in Nepal. South Asia Centre for Medical Physicists and Cancer Research Centre (SCMPCR) organized the hands-on workshop.#nepal #health #rss
