JSP Chairman Mahantha Thakur open on KP Oli

KATHMANDU: Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Chairman Mahantha Thakur is openly in favor of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Thakur and his lawmakers remained neutral during Prime Minister Oli’s vote of confidence in parliament on Monday.

Stating that the talks with Prime Minister Oli are moving forward in a positive manner on the removal of cases of prisoners, release of prisoners, citizenship and amendment of the constitution, he has announced that he will not participate in the formation of the new government.

“In the current political situation, addressing the agenda rather than gaining power is the main goal of the party. It is against the purpose of the party to deviate from the issue and form a government, participate in the government or form any kind of alternative government,” Thakur said in a statement on Monday night.

Thakur is of the view that the formation of an alternative government will lead to more instability and the task of addressing the agenda will be pushed towards uncertainty.

On the other hand, another Chairman of JSP Dr Baburam Bhattarai and Upendra Yadav have voted against the KP Oli government and are openly trying to form a new government. Bhattarai-Yadav lawmakers voted against Prime Minister Oli’s vote of confidence on Monday.

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, UCPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Prachanda and JSP Chairman Upendra Yadav had jointly written a letter to President Bidya Devi Bhandari urging her to move ahead with the process of forming a new government as per Article 76 (2) of the Constitution.

President Bhandari has also given a deadline of May 13 to form a majority government.
