Kamal Thapa announces to quit RPP, Surprise to Chair Lingden

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) outgoing Chairman Kamal Thapa has said now he is no more associated with the party.

Organising a press meet in Hetauda today, leader Thapa announced to quit the party. “I have decided to leave the party with a heavy heart and the moment is very painful for me.”

As he explained, he was obliged to take this ‘unwanted decision’ as his calls for correcting what he called the ideological deviation and wrong tendencies within the party remained unheard.

Though he wished to spend his remaining political career in the party, it could not be possible, he added.

Thapa was defeated in the party’s recently held General Convention. There was bitter exchange of rants between newly elected Chairman Rajendra Lingden and outgoing Chair Thapa.

Thapa has repeatedly argued that there was open interference from former King Gyanendra Shah in the party’s internal matter, and supporting Lingden in the election.

However, both leaders had met physically recently to solve the issues in a friendly manner, but it couldn’t sort out the differences.

Meanwhile, the emergency meeting of the central working committee has termed the Thapa’s exit from the party was unfortunate and ‘unexpected’.

After being defeated in the election, Thapa was demanding clarification on King’s involvement in the election. But, Chair Lingden had repeatedly rejected the claim of Thapa and nominated several members in the party without consulting Thapa.
