Kathmandu, Nov 30: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Nepal, has sterilized 3,469 community dogs and cats in 60 days as part of mass sterilization campaign.

Similarly, 5,320 dogs and cats have been vaccinated against rabies, the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolis Balen Shah has shared.

By working at this pace, all community dogs and cats will be sterilized and vaccinated by the end of December 16. The Metropolis started the sterilization and vaccination campaign from October 10 from all 9 wards in collaboration with 9 companies and partner organizations.

Mayor Shah has said, “We did not find as many dogs and cats as we expected. We are recording the stray dogs found in the village in the register of the ward representative, embracing animal welfare and animal rights, taking them to the shelter for sterilization and rehabilitating them after treatment. Sterilized dogs and cats are wearing ear notches (small marks on their ears).”

He has further said that our goal was to limit the number of community dogs and cats, and create a suitable environment.

Mayor Shah has vowed to continue the program, and has requested all residents to identify dogs and cats without ear notch. He has said, “For this, if you see a stray dog without an ear notch, call our call center toll free no 1180.”

In 2080 BS, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City issued a procedure for sterilization, vaccination and recording of dogs and cats. The program was run based on the arrangements mentioned in the procedure.

“In the case of domestic animals, we would like to request that the owner arrange sterilization and vaccination by himself. Apart from this, we are in the process of attaching ‘micro chips’ to pet dogs and cats. After that, all house owners who keep pets must keep the chips. This will make it easier to manage the number and situation by uniting the number”,  he has said.

Mayor Shah has further said that the Metropolis was in the process of purchasing an ambulance to transport animals.  “We are purchasing an incinerator for the management of dead animals. This will add a new dimension to animal welfare and animal rights.”
