KP Oli: “We’re ready to sacrifice for national dignity, don’t provoke CPN UML”

KP Sharma Oli

Bhaktapur, Oct 9: The UML, which was pushed out of power because of the Gen Z movement on September 8 and 9, 2025, has given a clear message that it will take to the streets against the interim government and its recent actions. On the day that marked exactly one month since the Gen Z movement, Oli, from Gundu in Bhaktapur, not only raised serious questions about the current leadership and the political path after the movement but also announced that he would resist it.

After staying for ten days within security cordons provided by the Nepal Army and holding internal talks with party leaders, Oli delivered a rhetorically sharp speech from the stage on Thursday, in his familiar style. In that speech he rejected the current government, the Gauri Bahadur Karki led three member investigative commission formed by the government, the dissolution of parliament, and the restricting him of travel, outside of Kathmandu valley and abroad.

The UML will hold a display of strength in Kathmandu this coming Saturday, including a motorcycle rally. At the same event, Politburo member Mahesh Basnet said the rally will be organized by the Youth Association, affiliated with CPN UML.

Speaking at the party event in Gundu, Bhaktapur, Oli announced that he fully rejects the Commission set up to investigate the indiscriminate police firing on Gen Z youths. The commission had received a complaint from the families of those killed in the Gen Z unrest asking that Oli be prosecuted for crimes against humanity; that complaint was forwarded by the police.

Oli claimed that the present government was not formed with the purpose of holding general elections, and he said they would not wait until March 5, 2026 to press for the reinstatement of House of Representatives.

Reinstatement of the House of Representatives

Chair Oli said the House of Representatives must be reinstated. He also said both the current government and the dissolution of parliament were unconstitutional.

“…If we don’t act in time, later we’ll regret that it was too late. Some people say, ‘Let’s wait until March 5 — if elections don’t happen then we will demand the restoration of parliament,’” he said. “The dissolution of parliament is unconstitutional, wrong, illegal, and anti-democratic. It is against the national interest — don’t we know that? Should we wait for March 5 next year? We don’t have to wait.”

He referred to the circumstance in which the parliament was dissolved, noting that it occurred because Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and others had insisted on appointing Mrs Sus‍hila Karki as Prime Minister of the country. “The dissolution of parliament was done unconstitutionally. Who was given the authority to dissolve parliament and trample the constitution? From where was that authority obtained?”

Although there was agreement among all parties to protect parliament and the constitution while providing an alternative, he claimed the dissolution was still unconstitutional. “There was consensus that we should protect the constitution and the parliament and seek a solution from within them; at that time those decisive elements had also agreed,” Oli said. “When I spoke, there was agreement to uphold the constitution, keep the parliament, and seek a solution from within the constitution and parliament.”

Refusal to accept the investigative commission

Chair Oli said he will not accept the commission formed to investigate the government’s crackdown on the Gen Z uprising.

He declared that he would not recognize that commission or any report it prepares. “First they set up a commission composed of people who wanted ‘KP Oli must be arrested and jailed,’ then they will theatrically investigate and produce a report, and then pretend to act on that report — such theatrics are not acceptable to the Nepali Congress or the UML. We will not accept them,” Oli said.

The government formed a commission headed by Gauri Bahadur Karki to investigate the government suppression of the Gen Z uprising on September 8, 2025.

Warning to the government

Oli protested the freezing of his passport and the restriction on leaving the valley, saying he will not flee out of fear of Prime Minister Sushila Karki.

He warned Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal not to provoke talk of arresting him. He emphasized that running the country is not a joke and urged caution. “They say my passport is blocked. Am I not allowed to cross a ridge? Will I flee in fear of Sushila Karki becoming prime minister?” he said. “Actually, I do not know the current home minister well, but I want to advise him not to be overly hasty or arrogant. Running politics and running the country is not a thing to be trifled with.”

He warned not to humiliate the UML because they are ready to sacrifice for the country’s dignity. “We have suffered prison and hardship. This is not new for us,” he said. “We are ready to sacrifice for the nation’s dignity; there is no need to mock us. We brought people’s rule. We have fought.”

The current government was formed by trickery, he said

Oli alleged that the interim government formed after the unrest of September 8 and 9, 2025 was not constitutional and had been formed by deceit.

“The country’s situation is extraordinary and abnormal now because the government was not formed according to the constitution. It was formed by trickery,” Oli said. “The current prime minister placed conditions to become prime minister; conditions were set for becoming prime minister.”

He warned that if parliament is not restored, the Gen Z will set the country on fire. “I recommend that the parliament be immediately dissolved after taking the oath. If that recommendation is implemented and parliament is dissolved, then I will become prime minister; otherwise Gen Z will set the country on fire,” he said.

He also said that a former judge or former chief justice should not hold any government post. “Someone who has been a former justice or chief justice cannot occupy any government position,” he said.

UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel said that while problems have arisen in the country, there is a need to create an environment of unity and consensus within the country, and disputes should not be created within the party.

Dr Rajan Bhattarai, in-charge of UML Bagmati Province Committee, and Politburo member Mahesh Basnet, among others, expressed that UML should be made a united and strong force for the defence of democracy and the country. #nepal #KPOLI #GenZ
