Lhasa Friendship Association donates aid supplies to Kathmandu



Kathmandu, Oct 30:  Lhasa People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries of Xizang Autonomous Region of China has donated aid supplies to Nepal-China Sister-City Friendship Association.

Amid a special program organized by the Association on Wednesday evening, the aid supplies were handed over by its President Liu Fuping to Dipak Sarkar, President of Nepal-China Sister-City Friendship Association. Fuping is also the Director of Lhasa Municipal Foreign Affairs Office.

Both sides also exchanged the donation certificate following which Liu shared that the two cities Lhasa and Kathmandu have successively carried out fruitful exchanges and cooperation in various fields in past years.

“Over the past 14 years, Lhasa has provided assistance to Kathmandu for 10 times in the form of solar equipment, urban construction materials, and anti-epidemic medical supplies worth 10.1747 million yuan. Especially during the critical moments of the 2015 Nepal earthquake and the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the two cities have supported each other,” Liu expressed.

Kathmandu and Lhasa had established a sister-city relations in 2011, since which there have been several exchange visits, participation in trade fairs and cultural activities and other forms of cooperation.

Receiving the aid supplies, Dipak Sarkar expressed gratitude to the Association and shared that the donation will be distributed to communities as in past years. The aid supplies include computers, generators, table tennis boards among others.

He also stressed on holding more activities in the field of trade, culture and tourism as the two cities have had a long history of friendly exchanges, dating back over 1,300 years.

Lhasa is the first city in China to have direct flights with Nepal. Currently, Nepal-China joint venture Himalaya Airlines has been conducting direct flights from Kathmandu and Pokhara to Lhasa.

To be noted, Nepal is the only foreign country that has established a consulate general in Lhasa, dating back to 1956, following the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and China in 1955.

The Nepali residents living in Lhasa are the largest foreign population group in Lhasa. Many Nepalis immigrants have settled in Lhasa since generations, regarding Lhasa as their “second hometown”. #nepal
