KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari commended Lions Club’s ‘significant’ role in health, education and natural disaster response.
At a programme organized by the Lions Club of International at Office of President-Shital Niwas- on Sunday, President Bhandari lauded the contribution of the Lions Club in operating schools, hospitals and orphanages. “I was happy to learn Lions Club’s projects are being run in low administrative costs.”
Bhandari viewed that social organizations had a huge role for job creations and making the country self-reliant in the context of the State paying attention to commercialize and modern agriculture sector.
The Head of the State opined that social organizations should also join the State’s efforts in reducing the risks of natural disasters, stating that natural disasters had been incurring huge loss of lives and property during monsoon.
On the occasion, Lions Club had feted President Bhandari. A documentary documenting Club’s activities was also shown at the programme.
Founder of Lions Club Mulchand Rathi and Kisanlal Dugad were feted in the event.
Similarly, President Bhandari honoured Indu Devi Naulakha, who had contributed to freedom movement in the country by donating100 tolas of gold.
Social workers Nanda Kishor Rathi, Mukundaraj Pandey and Shesh Narayan Shrestha were also feted by the President. President of Lions Club Rewat Bahadur Karki pledged to continue Club’s cooperation in education, health and disaster management in coming days.
Lions Club was established in 1971 in the name of Lions Club of Biratnagar initially. It was helmed by former Prime Minister Matrika Prasad Koirala.
Lions club activities in Nepal
Currently, there are over 2,000 branches of Lions Club across the country working in the social causes.
The first Lion President of Nepal, Lion Matrika Prasad Koirala was born on 1st January 1912 in Biratnagar, Morang the eastern part of Nepal.
He took the opportunity to become the First Lion President of Nepal by establishing the Lions Club of Biratnagar in the year 1971. The extension chairperson of the Lions Club of Biratnagar was Lion P.C. Jain of LC Ajmer, India. Lion Koirala was a well-known social and political figure in Nepal.
Lion District in Nepal:
In 1976-77
Lion Dr. Anjani Kumar Sharma became the first Nepali District Governor of 322 E and Multiple Council Chairperson in 1977-78.
In 1982-83
Nepal got its full-fledged district i.e.325. Lion H.P. Giri became the First District Governor of Lions Clubs International District 325, Nepal.
In 1997-98
Lion Pankaj Pradhan became the Multiple Council Chairperson of District 325.
