Make elections a mandate for change, President Paudel tells leaders

Kathmandu, Dec 15: President Ramchandra Paudel has called on all stakeholders to dedicate themselves to nation-building by internalizing the mandate entrusted to them by the people. He emphasized the need for leadership marked by renewed thinking, style, planning, dedication, energy, conduct, and integrity to effectively fulfill that mandate.

Addressing a programme organized in Kathmandu today on the occasion of the 31st Kathmandu Metropolitan City Day, the Head of State said it was the collective responsibility of all to hand over a prosperous nation to future generations by responding to the needs and priorities of the present. “I believe we must not deviate from fulfilling our responsibilities,” he said.

Stressing the ethical foundation of politics, President Paudel said it was essential to cultivate the understanding that politics is neither a profession nor a business, but the noblest form of social service. “This is precisely what the Nepali people expect at this moment,” he said, adding that the same sentiment was clearly reflected in the recent movement led by the younger generation.

Noting that seeking the people’s mandate to resolve the country’s existing challenges is the supreme method in a democratic system, the President called on all concerned to move forward by ensuring the success of the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives.

“That is why the House of Representatives elections will be held on March 5 to address the aspirations of the youth for change,” he said. “Let us make these elections a success and move ahead with the task of building a prosperous Nepal founded on social justice and good governance.”

The President also commended Kathmandu Metropolitan City for its innovative achievements in economic, social, and physical development, as well as in urban management.

“I believe the services, facilities, and programmes delivered to service seekers and beneficiaries have demonstrated the meaningful role played by youth leadership and energetic elected representatives in the metropolitan city,” President Paudel said.

He stated that the local government has set exemplary standards in urban management, river and water system management, promotion of greenery, conservation of natural heritage, restoration of temples, monasteries, ponds, lakes, stone spouts, and physical heritage, along with efforts toward integrated urban development.

The President further noted that Kathmandu Metropolitan City has made its services citizen-friendly, accountable, transparent, and service-oriented through the extensive use of information and communication technology, the operation of a single service centre, and the prioritization of an effective grievance-management system.

“This has conveyed a clear message that the level of government closest to the people is capable of delivering effective local governance,” he said.

Stating that not only the policies, plans, actions, and programmes implemented by the metropolitan city, but also the experiences and lessons learned, would serve as valuable examples for other local levels, the President expressed confidence that the local government would continue striving to formulate the best possible policies, programmes, and plans.

He added that for the prosperity of the capital city, the policies, programmes, and plans formulated by the metropolitan municipality require the support and cooperation of all concerned bodies, including the federal and provincial governments, for their effective implementation.

Expressing confidence in the city’s future performance, President Paudel said Kathmandu Metropolitan City would be able to deliver more effectively in the days ahead in addressing the needs, aspirations, and dreams of its residents.

Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut, Speaker Devraj Ghimire, and National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal were also present at the programme.

On the occasion, the President honoured individuals for their outstanding contributions in various fields, while the Vice President presented awards to local representatives for their exemplary performance in their respective areas. #nepal #president
