KATHMANDU: The CPN (Maoist Centre) has decided to withdraw its support to the present KP Sharma Oli government. A Standing Committee meeting held at the party’s Parisdanda office on Tuesday decided to withdraw support.
“It was simply a formality. We did not have the support to this government,” said Spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha.
He said that the party will notify the parliament regarding the withdrawal of support to this government.
“There is no support for this government,” said Shrestha.
The CPN (Maoist Centre) took the decision two days after PM KP Sharma Oli decided to seek vote of confidence in the House of Representatives. Prime Minister Oli on Sunday decided to prove his majority in the House on May 10. Accordingly, the President on Sunday summoned the House meeting for May 10.
The CPN (MC) has been claiming that they do not support the current government after the dissolution of the House of Representatives, calling it an unconstitutional and undemocratic act.
The party has been facing criticism for not withdrawing its support to the government even months after the Supreme Court quashed the unification of the erstwhile CPN (UML) and CPN (MC) and revived the old parties on March 7.
Chairman of CPN (UML) Oli was elected as Prime Minister in February 2018 with the support of the CPN (MC).
The CPN-UML and CPN (MC) had merged in May 2018 to form a unified Nepal Communist Party (NCP) following the victory of their alliance in the 2017 general elections, but now they have again divided as separate parties.
Now, Prime Minister Oli is seeking support from a faction of Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) led by Mahantha Thakur and Rajendra Mahato. If PM Oli fails to garner support from JSP, the government will lose confidence in the House, and government will fall.
