Hetauda, June 6: The number of people migrating to Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City has been increasing, with more people moving in than leaving.
According to the Social Security and Vital Registration Section of Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City, the trend of inward migration has been rising in recent years. The records show that most of those relocating to Hetauda for permanent settlement are coming from the Tarai districts. People from Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Sarlahi, and Mahottari districts have been identified as the main groups moving to Hetauda for permanent residence.
According to the section, 1,024 households migrated to Hetauda in fiscal year 2022/23, 959 households in 2023/24, 819 households in 2024/25 and 593 households have migrated to Hetauda by mid-May of the current fiscal year. In contrast, 566 households left Hetauda in 2022/23, 586 in 2023/24, 480 in 2024/25, and 353 households by mid-May of the current fiscal year.
New residents tend to prefer Ward Nos. 4, 5, 7, and 8 of the sub-metropolitan city. According to Assistant Professor Umesh Aryal of Makwanpur Multiple Campus, migration to Hetauda increased after the past political unrest in the Tarai region, with people considering it a safer place to live.
He said people are also moving due to better opportunities in education, healthcare, business, and employment, as well as the favourable climate.“Recently, Hetauda has also become a destination for school and higher education, increasing both temporary and permanent population pressure,” he said. Mayor Mina Kumari Lama said the growing population has brought both opportunities and challenges for the city.
She said the municipality is working on plans to manage incoming residents by improving services and expanding infrastructure in education, healthcare, and employment.
“We have increased investment in school education due to rising student numbers,” she said. “We are also working to strengthen healthcare services by operating basic health centres in every ward and hospitals in two wards.” She added that efforts are also underway to improve sanitation and maintain a healthy urban environment. #nepal
