Kathmandu: Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizen, Thamamaya Thapa, has urged the international community to extend support in order to attain sustainable development goals within 2030 and to promote reproductive rights.

Minister Thapa urged the international, regional and national partner bodies to support to control violence against children and women, child marriage and forced marriage as well as to end maternal mortality rate.

Addressing the ‘Nairobi Summit’ organised on the 25th anniversary of International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) at Nairobi on Wednesday, she said that the government of Nepal has given priority to ensure adolescent-friendly services, expansion of sex education, and to enable youths to fully utilize their reproductive rights, according to the Ministry.

Minister Thapa said, “Nepal has supported ICPD and has been following it since the Cairo Summit held in 1994. Nepal has forwarded ICPD’s spirit—women rights, sustainable development and reproductive rights – with importance.”

She also pointed out the need of implementing ICPD’s action plan to achieve sustainable development goals within 2030. The summit is organised by the governments of Kenya and Denmark and UNFPA and has been taking place from November 12-14.

A Nepali delegation led Minister Thapa had left for Nairobi on November 10 to take part in the summit.
