Narayanhiti Palace is one of the most famous historical landmarks of Nepal. It is located in Kathmandu, the capital city. In the past, this grand palace was the residence of the Nepali royal family.
For many years, the Shah kings, queens, princes, and princesses lived here. Today, Narayanhiti Palace has been transformed into a museum where visitors can explore and learn about Nepal’s rich history.
The palace is large, strong, and impressive in design. Its architecture looks majestic and royal. Inside, there are spacious halls and beautifully decorated rooms. Large chandeliers hang from the ceilings, lighting up the palace and adding to its elegance.
The interiors are decorated with traditional Kasthakala (wood carving), which reflects Nepali art and culture. The walls and furniture are painted in attractive colours, giving the palace a rich and royal appearance.
Narayanhiti Palace has 52 rooms, each named after one district of Nepal. These rooms served different purposes. Some were used during important festivals like Dashain and Tihar, while others were meant for official meetings, royal ceremonies, and administrative work. There were also private rooms where the king and queen lived and rested.
The palace was designed by architect Benjamin Polk in the early 1900s. It includes several buildings built specifically for members of the royal family. Separate sections were allocated for the king, the queen, and other family members. Outside the palace, there are well-maintained gardens filled with green grass, flowers, and trees. In the past, rare plants grew in these gardens, creating a peaceful environment. At night, bright lights enhance the beauty of the palace even more.

Narayanhiti Palace is also associated with a tragic event in Nepal’s history. In 2001, a royal massacre occurred inside the palace, resulting in the death of King Birendra and several members of the royal family. This incident deeply shocked the nation. In the years that followed, Nepal’s monarchy system eventually came to an end.
Today, Narayanhiti Palace stands as an important museum. Every year, many students, teachers, and tourists visit the palace. Visitors can see royal rooms, furniture, clothes, and various objects used by the royal family.
The palace helps people understand Nepal’s past and learn how kings and queens once lived. Narayanhiti Palace remains a place full of history, memories, and valuable lessons for future generations. #nepal
