NATTA files writ demanding VAT scrap

Kathmandu, July 28: The Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), the umbrella organization of Nepal’s tourism businessmen, has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court demanding the scrap of VAT levied on air services.

NATTA  has said Value Added Tax (VAT) on air services will make the travel more expensive. President of NATTA, Ramesh Thapa, said that the VAT levied on the tourism industry makes the air service more expensive.  He informed that the government was adamant to levie the tax despite repeated requests. “It forced us to knock on apex court for justice and make the travel sector viable.”

“We have filed a writ according to the advice of NATTA’s ex-chairman’s council, members of NATTA, lawyers, tax consultants and the decision of the NATTA board,” he said. NATTA said that the sustainable development of the tourism sector can only be achieved through the cooperation of the government and private businessmen.
