Kathmandu, Sept 9: General Secretaries of the major ruling coalition partner, the Nepali Congress, Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, have urged Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign and pave the way for a national consensus.
In a joint statement issued today, the duo also called on ministers representing the party to leave the government, emphasizing that Prime Minister Oli’s resignation is necessary to facilitate the formation of a ‘new national consensus’.
“We repeatedly raised concerns in party meetings, Parliament, and public forums that the government was not functioning properly and needed reform.
However, neither did the government improve nor did the Prime Minister thought it necessary to change his approach.
Consequently, public dissatisfaction has continued to grow due to the Prime Minister’s performance. The suppression of the ‘Gen Z’ youth who have taken to the streets with legitimate demands such as curbing corruption, ensuring good governance, and unblocking social media is condemnable,” the statement reads.
Thapa and Sharma further stated that the seven-point agreement made during the government’s formation has become irrelevant. They urged party President Sher Bahadur Deuba to immediately recall the party’s ministers from the Cabinet, warning that failure to do so would compel them to take alternative measures.
The General Secretaries also underscored the importance of addressing the just demands of the Gen Z movement, while urging for a strong role in ensuring that protests remain peaceful and disciplined.
Additionally, they appealed to all political parties to engage in open and constructive dialogue in order to find a measured and collaborative solution to the current political crisis.
