Nepal Police’s Tika Maya bags gold in weight lifting



Kathmandu: Nepal Police Club’s player Tika Maya Gurung clinched the gold medal in weight lifting game under the ongoing 9th National Games in Pokhara.

In the second match held at Pokhara Commerce and Industries’ hall on Monday, Gurung received the gold medal.

On the inaugural day on last Sunday, Nepal Police had secured three gold medals while Nepali Army Club one in the weight lifting.

According to Ram Krishna Shrestha, President of the Nepal Weight Lifting Association, Gurung lifted altogether 140 kg out of which 60 kg was lifted under the snatch attempt and 80 kg under clean and jerk to clinch the gold medal.

Similarly, Nepali Army’s Prabha Tharu stood second in the weight lifting by lifting altogether 129 kg out of which 58 kg was under the snatch attempt and 71 kg under clean and jerk.

She got bronze medal while Krishna Kala Bista of Lumbini Province received silver medal. Bista lifted altogether 128 kg out of which 56 kg was lifted under snatch attempt and 72 kg under clean and jerk attempt.

A total of 12 players competed in the match. Weightlifting competition which will run through October 21 will be held in 10 events each in men’s and women’s categories.

Altogether 172 players-76 women and 96 men – are vying for 20 gold medals.

Meanwhile, Tribhuvan Army Club has secured the gold medal in chess competition under women classic event in the ongoing 9th National Games.

In the competition held in Gorkha on Monday, Sujana Lohani stood first by securing 9 points.

She secured victory in all nine matches held under the classic event to bag the gold medal, shared Dipesh Giri, one of the judges.

Similarly, Tribhuvan Army Club’s Sindira Joshi got bronze medal in the chess competition. She won in seven matches and ended up in a draw in a game to stand second to Lohani.

Province No 1’s Khusbu Thapa finished third in the competition by winning in six competitions and ending up in a draw in a competition.
