Kathmandu, Dec 15: The Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to observe three days of mourning following the demise of democratic fighter Amod Prasad Upadhyay endorsing a condolence motion in his honour.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the NC Central Working Committee held today under the chairmanship of party Vice President Dhanraj Gurung, and is effective immediately.

According to NC Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel, the party flag will be flown at half-mast for three days starting today at the party’s central, provincial, and district offices.

Upadhyay passed away on Saturday, December 13, at the age of 91 while undergoing treatment for cancer at Hams Hospital in Kathmandu.

As per the meeting’s decisions, party offices from the central to the local level will remain closed on Tuesday, December 15. Condolence registers will be kept at party offices until the 13th day after his passing, and a condolence assembly will be organized in his home district of Morang on the same day.

The final rites of the late leader are scheduled to be performed today at Pashupati Aryaghat.

Upadhyay was nominated to the National Assembly in 2048 BS and was elected to the House of Representatives from Morang constituency-1 in the December 9, 1999, election. He was appointed Minister for Education and Sports in 2056 BS and served as a member of the reinstated Legislature Parliament following the historic People’s Movement of 2006.

He was again elected from Morang-1 during the 2008 Constituent Assembly elections. Widely regarded as a leader of integrity with a strong intellectual foundation, Upadhyay endured imprisonment on several occasions and lived in exile at different times during his long political career. #nepal #congress
