Nepalis can get labour permit from Abu Dhabi

Kathmandu, Feb 14: The Government of Nepal has introduced a system to issue labour permits from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well. Labour, Employment, and Social Security Minister Sharat Singh Bhandari officially launched the service during a program held in Dubai on Thursday.

According to the Nepali Embassy in Abu Dhabi, Minister Bhandari stated that the government aims to make services provided to migrant workers more accessible, simple, and technology-friendly to protect their interests and welfare. He emphasized that the new arrangement to issue labour permits directly from embassies will help Nepali workers avoid the hassle of traveling to Nepal for permits, allowing them to focus on their jobs and careers.

Minister Bhandari also mentioned that similar services will be gradually expanded to other embassies. Given that a significant portion of Nepal’s youth is engaged in foreign employment and remittances are a major source of national income, he stressed the need for appropriate policies and timely services to safeguard and support Nepali workers.

Nepal’s Ambassador to the UAE, Tej Bahadur Chhetri, highlighted the embassy’s ongoing efforts to support migrant workers. He noted that the introduction of an online labour permit service at the embassy will make it easier for workers to access the services provided by the Government of Nepal. Ambassador Chhetri reaffirmed the embassy’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nepali workers, despite limited staff and resources, and stated that this new online system will further improve service delivery.

Representatives from the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) and various Nepali community organizations in the UAE were also present at the event. NRNA UAE President Bikas Shahi and Nepali Society UAE President Ram Moktan shared their views during the interaction session.

Abu Dhabi is the second Nepali embassy, after Muscat, to offer labour permit services.

Meanwhile, Minister Bhandari represented Nepal at the World Government Summit 2025, held in the UAE from February 11 to 13. The summit saw the participation of over 30 heads of state and government, along with representatives from 140 countries. More than 6,000 participants, including international and regional organizations, intellectuals, academic experts, business leaders, and private sector representatives, attended the event.

Bagmati Province Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama was also among the attendees at the Summit. #nepal #labour #permit
