Nepalis embrace Dashain: Nation’s biggest festival fills homes, hearts

Kathmandu, Sept 23: With the start of Dashain or Bada Dashain, Nepal’s biggest festival, a festive atmosphere has spread across the country.

From the capital city to rural villages, households have planted jamara, families are preparing for reunions, and marketplaces are bustling with activity.

For Nepalis, Dashain is more than just a religious celebration. It is a time for family gatherings, an expression of faith, and a treasured cultural heritage.

In villages, children are already enjoying giant bamboo swings, while homes are being painted and cleaned. Communities are also joining hands to tidy up roads and surroundings, adding to the festival’s charm.

The festival begins with Navadurga worship and on Maha Navami, temples echo with the ringing of bells. Devotees offer animal sacrifices, garlands, and prayers for blessings.

Dashain is also known as the “festival of homecoming.” Many who live abroad or in cities return to their villages for the occasion. With the start of the Dashain, more than three lakh people have already left Kathmandu valley despite road obstructions. Emotional embraces, tears of joy, and laughter fill the courtyards when families reunite.

Sharing meals with loved ones during Dashain is considered a sacred tradition that strengthens bonds and deepens relationships.
